Weekly #72

Constant Contact Message from 8/3/2021

Hello everybody!

As we heard in last Sunday’s Gospel reading from the sixth chapter of John, Jesus is the bread of life. He is our nourishment and our life. He is our hope and our salvation. As we deal in life with uncertainty, challenges, and change, Jesus is always with us. In the Eucharist, we consume him and become what we receive. In the midst of the surge in the Covid-19 Delta variant, trust him. While we have not yet changed any official guidance for our safe at worship guidelines, you are always welcome to wear a mask at mass and meetings on campus. Please make wise choices for your safety and that of others. Jesus continues to be with us, nourish us, and guide us. We are his body now on earth. We remember who we are!

Early last Thursday, we had an unexpected and significant electrical issue at the rectory. After assessing the situation and turning off the power to the house, Fr. Tony, Fr. Quan, and I left the rectory at about 2:30 a.m. for a hotel. It didn’t seem safe or practical to stay there. The cable from the street to the house has been replaced, as well as, the electrical panel and some wiring. The rest of the wiring has been checked and we hope to move back in tomorrow (on Wednesday). We did lose some electronics and appliances, but we are working with our insurance to cover the expenses. I am grateful to be safe and for the hard work of our maintenance staff (especially Diego), contractors (especially Wagner Electric), and other staff (especially Carrie) for their additional time and effort in dealing with this issue. They have gone above and beyond! Thanks to all!

As we wind down construction in the coming weeks and ramp up preparations for the start of school on August 25, please keep all of our staff, faculty, families, and students in your prayers. Please say a prayer for me, as well, as I head out to Oregon on Thursday for some backpacking. I look forward to the trip and to seeing you again as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15. You are in my prayers every day. God bless!

Peace,

Fr. Jeff

Blood Drive, Sunday August 22, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Celtic Center: The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants, and elective surgeries rise - and deplete the nation's blood inventory. Hospital demand continues to outpace donations, and your help is vital. There is an emergency need for Type O donors. We have appointments available and greatly appreciate those donors who have previously scheduled an appointment. To schedule, click HERE.

Fall Bible Study on Exodus with Dr. Scott Shuler: The Fishermen are excited to announce the next installment of our Monday night bible study. Following last fall’s study in Genesis, we will be looking at the book of Exodus, in which God’s people are led out of slavery and into new life. As we study this ancient story, we will touch on what it means to be “saved,” learn how to depend on God in difficult circumstances, and why the Ten Commandments are not so much a set of rules for us to follow but as insight into who God is and who we are. We will meet on Monday nights in Schindler Hall from 7:00-8:15 p.m. beginning September 13 through Thanksgiving. The study is open to both men and women of all ages. All sessions will be audio recorded and made available if you miss a session, however, it will not be live streamed. If interested, contact Joe Gates at (502) 544-9391 or mrjoegates@gmail.com
